At Infinite Group, we have always strived to provide help and support to those who need it most. In the past year we became aware of the plight of the estimated 40,000 children between the ages of 9-17 living on the streets of the Philippines, where one of our member companies, Information Technology Systems Management (ITSM), is located. For these children, every day is a fight for survival. With no safe place to sleep, no reliable source of food, and the constant threat of illness, abuse, and violence, their future is bleak, as is that of their future children. Here, poverty is often a cycle that simply can’t be broken.
Fortunately, Childhope Asia, a non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian organization, is committed to acting as advocates for these often forgotten children. This is why, at Infinite Group, we are thrilled to have been able to make a donation to this worthy organization, as well as send two of our own employees to visit the headquarters and attend a teaching session that included more than 20 children who are currently living on the streets.
About Childhope Asia
Founded as an international organization in 1986, Childhope Asia’s primary objective is to educate and feed the children in need. The 16 street educators currently take care of 700 children in five cities (Manila, Quezon City, Caloocan, Passay, and Paranaque), providing them with a meal, regular check-ups, and education designed to help them:
• Learn to protect themselves from different forms of abuse while on the street and reflect on their situation in order to plan their life goals.
• Access basic social services and other forms of assistance.
• Understand their child rights and responsibilities.
• Leave the streets, whether this involves being reunited with their family or being transferred to a recovery center, depending on what is in their best interest.
• Learn the skills needed to become productive, responsible citizens and break the cycle of poverty.
Over the years, Childhope Asia has seen tremendous success. Thirteen children are attending college and a current educator who has been on staff for 3 years was enrolled in the program as a homeless child. Unfortunately, despite all the good Childhope Asia does, the organization receives absolutely no government funding and lost one of their biggest benefactors in 2013 after officials determined that the Philippines was no longer a third world country. While it’s true the economy is improving, this has not extended to children living on the street.
Today, the organization remains in desperate need of funding to continue providing meals and to hire additional street educators in order to be able to providence assistance to even more street children.
Martijn Niessen, CEO of Infinite Group, said, “After our employees saw for themselves just how important Childhope Asia is to these children, who truly have nowhere else to turn, we knew that the charity would not only benefit immensely from any financial help we could provide, but would also use the contribution wisely. To date, our employee donations have helped 100 children attend Street Education sessions in Manila.”
Anyone interested in helping this worthwhile organization is encouraged to do so. Even the smallest contribution may help save the life of a deserving child.
